Studs Terkel’s FBI File Unearthed, With A Few Surprises

Posted by Giggi On November - 17 - 2009

CHICAGO — Long before the FBI identified him as a suspected communist and spent decades watching him and talking to confidential informants about him, late Chicago author Studs Terkel came to the agency for a job. That’s just one of the revelations – and maybe the most surprising one – contained in a thick FBI file that the NYCity News Service posted on its Web site over the weekend after obtaining it under a Freedom of Information Act request. The release of the file marks the most extensive look into Terkel’s work and activities as viewed by federal authorities, particularly by the FBI when it was headed by J. Edgar Hoover. That the FBI kept such a file is hardly a surprise. Terkel was an avowed liberal who supported the civil rights movement and opposed the Vietman War. His books and radio interviews stand as a tribute to working people and the downtrodden. Terkel spoke and wrote openly about being blacklisted during the McCarthy era, when studios – fearful of being accused of sympathizing with communists – refused to hire actors, writers, directors and others suspected of having pro-communist sentiments. Terkel, who wrote the best-seller “Working” and Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Good War, died last year at the age of 96. Andre Schiffrin, who edited all of Terkel’s books, said Terkel was “very proud” that FBI started a file on him, although he had applied for work at the agency as a “student fingerprint classifier” in 1934, according to one document. “He was proud of the fact that when he applied for work at the FBI … Hoover (was) saying, ‘He’s not our kind of guy, not our kind of boy,’” said Schiffrin, a longtime friend of Terkel. Documents in the FBI file date to 1945 and most are from the ’40s and ’50s. But the file also contains some documents from the 1960s and ’70s and, for some unknown reason, a copy of a 1990 Wall Street Journal article about junk bond king Michael Milken, in which Terkel was quoted. The news service reported that it received only 147 pages of what it said was a 269-page file. It said the FBI refused to hand over the rest for “privacy and other reasons.” Most of the pages are devoted to the FBI’s effort to determine if Terkel was a communist. Some references – such as one about a confidential informant telling the FBI that Terkel had agreed to give a “short talk at the Red Army Celebration” – seem laughable now. But they are the types of accusations that resulted in scores of people in the entertainment industry being blacklisted in the late 1940s and into the 1950s. One confidential informant reported that Terkel appeared to take inspiration from the New York-based communist newspaper “Daily Worker” and that he once said blacklisted actor and singer Paul Robeson “is a product of all the people fighting for freedom, for justice for all.” A 1950 file states that Terkel “reportedly has been Master of Ceremonies at various functions from 1945 to 1949 sponsored by the American Youth for Democracy, Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee, civil Rights Congress and International Workers Order, which have been designated by the United States Attorney General as Communist Organizations.” In at least one instance, a person whose name was redacted said Terkel was a member of the Communist Party of America. Yet nowhere in the file does the FBI assert point-blank that Terkel was a party member. And Schiffrin said Terkel wasn’t. “He was certainly sympathetic to a lot of their causes, but he never did join,” said Schiffrin. “He used to boast that he never met a petition he didn’t like.” Schiffrin said Terkel might have been disappointed to learn of one notation in the file: that he was discharged from the Army in 1943 because he was too old. That wasn’t the reason, said Schiffrin. “Military intelligence got him out because he was subversive,” he said.

I am currently in Miyazaki /Japan, attending the Infinity Ventures Summit (IVS), one of Asia’s most prestigious web industry events. Organizing VC company Infinity Venture Partners reserved some hours of the program to give a total of twelve 12 Japanese start-ups the chance to present their services onstage to a panel of judges and an international crowd of over 300 people. A speech recognition and transcribing service called Moji Moji TV was selected as “Best Startup” of the IVS Fall 2009 Launch Pad (that ended just now). Here are short profiles of all the services that demo’d at the event. (Please note some of the companies have yet to launch homepages in English, but some do offer globalized services, too.) One Winner and five runners-up: Moji Moji TV by Catalog (winner of the demo pad) Best of show went to Moji Moji TV , which appears to be a very powerful speech recognition and transcribing service for videos launched in private alpha last month. The engine supports Japanese only, but English and Chinese versions are in the works. Moji Moji extracts audio from a video (self-made movies, YouTube clips etc.) and automatically displays the spoken words as text, which then can be edited by the users. The text can be used to tag and sub movies, and it’s also possible to search for certain words or expressions within them. There’s also an iPhone app called Shabetter that automatically transcribes what you say into the iPhone mic and posts it to Twitter. More information on Moji Moji TV in English can be found here . This video (in English) shows how Moji Moji TV works: V-Sido by Wataru Yoshizaki (runner-up) Most robots used for entertainment, in research and other areas have one common problem: They can only move in a slow, mechanical and chopping motion. Developed by robot fanatic Wataru Yamazaki, V-Sido is a software-based, real-time control system for humanoids that helps make them move smoother. Spysee by Ohma (second runner-up) Spysee is a person search engine whose English version launched at TechCrunch 50 this year (Spysee was a demo pit company ). A Chinese version is in the works. The service pulls information and media on individuals from the web and presents them on a person-specific page (example: Barack Obama ). Spysee’s original Japanese version went live last year and has gone through several iterations since. One example is the way Spysee monetizes its service now: It allows users to donate real money to individuals who need help in funding their personal goals ( Cheering Spysee ), getting a cut of the donation in return. m-police by milog (third runner-up) m-police is a fully automatized site monitoring system that’s able to detect profanity, insults and “legally problematic” sentences on the web and subdivides relevant expressions into 16 different categories. The company says about 5% of all posts in the Japanese blogosphere can be regarded as being relevant for m-police, and 22% of those can be called potentially dangerous. Some Japanese social networks employ up to 300 “surveillance officers” to keep their sites clean. m-police can push down costs from 6 Yen (7 cent) per post monitored by human beings to 3 Yen. AEGISGUARD by KLab (fourth runner-up) AEGISGUARD is anti-virus software that’s not only free to download but also completely available in English. The main purpose of the program is to protect your important files and folders from viruses (of which more than 5 million exist today) and malware by granting only white-listed programs access to them. AEGISGUARD developer KLab says this way, unknown or new viruses are effectively fenced out. The solution can be installed with conventional, blacklist-based antivirus software on the same PC. Symphonic Motion by AITIA (fourth runner-up) Symphonic Motion is an augmented reality-based entertainment engine that’s not designed for mobile devices for a change but rather for large-sized displays (that can be several meters in diameter). The technology uses “physical” AR, meaning you can get in front of the camera and move CG elements you see on the screen around by moving your arms, for example. Maker AITIA is marketing the solution as interactive, fun digital signage applications to corporations, exhibitions and event organizers ( demo movie ). The six other demo companies: OpenSocial Host by HeartRails OpenSocial Host is an integrated platform for developing, distributing and managing OpenSocial applications, e.g. for sites like MySpace , hi5 or Japan’s biggest social network Mixi .(which opened its site for external developers back in September this year). OpenSocial Host supports mobile apps, offers paid and free options, but it’s Japanese only. Location Amplifier by Koozyt The key idea behind Location Amplifier is to “amplify” the real world by pushing “rich”, location-based content onto mobile phones, for example location-based games or guides. At IVS, maker Koozyt demonstrated how a person’s movements can be tracked even inside buildings (where GPS regularly fails). It’s also possible to use Location Amp to walk from exhibit to exhibit in a museum and let your mobile device tell you what you’re currently looking at ( demo movies ). The technology is based on PlaceEngine , a service that relies on Wi-Fi to estimate your location, even when there’s no GPS. Zeke CMS Social Game Kit by Ubiquitous Entertainment Ubiquitous Entertainment CEO Ryo Shimizu demo’d Zeke CMS Social Game Kit , a (Japanese-only) platform for developing games to be deployed in social networks like Facebook or Japan’s biggest social network Mixi . One of the games that was built using the system is called “Tokyo Treasure”, a scavenger hunt, which combines AR elements with the real world, using the iPhone camera (”It’s game over when you’re tagged!”). Droidget AR by GClue Droidget AR was described as the world’s first widget framework for augmented reality services on Android. These widgets can be “picked up” at the physical place where they’ve been left by other people and used instantly, without the user having to access the web. Example: When you’re in a restaurant, switch on the camera on your Android phone, point it at the door and click on the AR tag you see to instantly access the menu ( demo movies ). Jitsu Kuukan Toushi Keitai by KDDI au one Labs KDDI , Japans second biggest telecommunications company, presented an augmented reality application that launched in June this year for a limited number of Japanese cell phones. Their Jitsu Kuukan Toushi Keitai app (which roughly translates to: cell phone that allows real space transparency) works just like many of the other mobile AR apps out there. It uses GPS, the phone’s camera, 6-axis sensor and screen to locate where you are and point you to where you want to go through tags. But if you point the phone to a wall or a human being, you can also “see through” them, meaning the app will display tags located behind them. This video shows how Toushi Keitai’s “see-through” function works: Odette Solution by ORSO Odette Solution lets you create mobile Flash sites (nearly 100% of Japanese mobile phones have Flash Lite installed). The Japanese-only, cloud-based ASP service offers various templates whose elements you can edit in various ways, for example by drag and drop. But you can also create mobile web pages by putting together different elements. Odette Solution will be launched next spring. We’ve never truly been at ease with that Geek Squad crowd . Something about “the people” they hang with and “the places” they hang at just worries us, so we’re pretty thrilled to see another mega-corp stepping in to take the place of the now-deceased Circuit City FireDog crew. Starting sometime before the holiday season, Wally World will be partnering with N.E.W. Customer Service Companies in order to offer in-home installation to customers buying anything from a wireless router to a HTIB. The service plans will be sold on prepaid cards ranging from $99 to $399 in value, and each install includes a “preliminary consultation and a tutorial after installation is completed.” Granted, it may be a bit tough to get the dude looking to spend $5 on a new plasma to spring for such a service, but hey, it’s not like competition is a bad thing. Michael Sigman: Job-Seeking in Tough Times

Posted by Giggi On October - 25 - 2009

In the media/entertainment business these days, so many qualified applicants are chasing so few good jobs it’s enough to drive you into selling real estate. Oh, wait, there aren’t any jobs there, either. This week the New York Times laid off more than a hundred editorial staffers, Conde Nast — in the wake of closing four titles last week — announced cuts at Architectural Digest and Bon Apetit and the LA Times lurched through its umpteenth round of firings. But there are always opportunities out there. In order to land one you need the focus of Tiger Woods, the patience of the Dalai Lama and the pushiness of Sammy Glick. Herewith, a few do’s and don’ts from someone who’s interviewed thousands and hired hundreds. THE SEARCH Call everyone you know and get them to call everyone they know. Think big but not too big. Apply for jobs you might actually qualify for — don’t waste time shooting for a top marketing position if your marketing experience extends only as far as Ralph’s. YOUR RESUME Don’t undersell yourself. I once got a resume from an applicant for a senior management post — we’ll call him Jack Smith — who’d spent his career as “Vice President/Jack Smith Enterprises.” If he didn’t have what it took to appoint himself president of his one-man band, I wasn’t interested. Don’t oversell yourself. No checkable lies or contradictory claims. Don’t say you’re a PhD but still working on your BA, or give dates of prior employment that, when added up, indicate you started working when you were a toddler. For every David Geffen who benefited from the big lie, there are ten John Bebers who lost out. Who’s John Beber? Exactly! PRE-INTERVIEW Do not drink multiple cups of coffee or take a bite out of your kid’s Adderol in advance of your interview. Speed combined with anxiety can result in lengthy disquisitions on the meaning of being. If you must medicate, take a beta blocker. Sit mindfully while you wait in the lobby. A job interview is a kind of blind date, where that first moment — even if it’s the boss walking by the waiting area to use the facilities — can be a deal-breaker. Sit comfortably with your spine in an upright position and pretend to read something related to the job you’re seeking. THE INTERVIEW At the outset, do shake hands with the interviewer, but then make sure to let go. Also, a death-grip will not earn points. Once the handshake is completed, no close talking, arm-touching or shoulder-clapping. Exude confidence but not arrogance. Explain what you can do for the company, not how much you need the job. Do not tell your prospective boss you want her job. If she says she’s looking for someone who wants her job, don’t take the bait. Avoid desperate sentences like, “I would do anything to get this job.” If asked to name your greatest strength, do not say “I’m a people person.” For a weakness, do not under any circumstances say “I care too much,” “I work too hard” or “I’m a perfectionist.” When the exec asks you if you have questions, ask two pre-rehearsed ones — no more, no less. Pay attention to the answers. (After I had explained a job opportunity in detail to one candidate, he asked me to describe the job opportunity.) If you’re hoping to get hired by Daily Variety , LA Weekly or Huffpost , don’t ask about the frequency of publication. THE CLOSE Don’t count on glowing references to put you over the top. Everyone likes everyone, or at least they say they do. Follow up the interview with an enthusiastic thank you note or email, even if doing so makes you cringe. If it’s an email: no emoticons, ee cummings-like lower casing, lol’s or fwiw’s. Don’t say “u” when you mean “you.” No jokes, no irony, no rambling displays of your erudition. Do what it takes to close the deal. I once had a promising applicant for controller ask to reschedule her follow-up interview because she couldn’t find a parking space. That wasn’t the kind of controlling I had in mind. When asked why you left your previous job, don’t supply grisly details but don’t lie. Resist the temptation to bad mouth your previous boss or company. It’s fine to call if you don’t hear anything after a couple of days, but don’t be obnoxious. Unless you’re applying for a sales job, in which case relentlessness is a virtue. Finally, if you’re offered the job, take it on the spot — in this environment an offer can disappear faster than a puny severance package. And if your boss turns out to be a monster, there’s always this: More on Conde Nast

Sony says Nazi PS3 ad is a "mock campaign" and not real

Posted by Giggi On October - 1 - 2009

We can’t say this was unexpected, but Sony just pinged us to say that that Nazi PS3 ad is “totally fake” and was made without their approval — here’s the statement from the executive president of BBDO Chile, which made the ads: This creative design did not involve and was never approved by Sony Computer Entertainment or Sony. This “mock campaign” was developed by BBDO Chile staff and was submitted to various creative competitions/festivals without prior notification or approval from SCE/Sony, and it is not representative of the views or advertising policies of SCE/Sony. BBDO Chile apologizes for using this creative concept without authorization or prior approval, and for its misrepresentation of the PlayStation brand and its values.

Audio Books on Mp3 are Convenient and Versatile

Posted by Giggi On March - 22 - 2009

There’s a reason why audio books on Mp3 are quickly becoming the most popular way to listen to audio books. The selection of compatible file formats for listening are so vast, including devices like an iPod, MP3 player, mobile phone, personal computer, portable Play Station, Personal Digital Assistant, and CD and DVD players.

Students, in particular, are taking advantage of the convenience of audio books on Mp3. They are an ideal way to study, which is why many textbooks are being released in digital download format. Because of their ease in accessibility, students can study on the run, while traveling to class, while having a bite to eat and, where allowed, on the job. Audio books are a helpful studying aid for students of all ages, making it simpler to take notes and enhancing listening and vocabulary skills. People with ADHD or ADD also benefit from the digital audio format because it allows them to move around and better focus on the spoken words.

An ideal audience for audio books on Mp3 is people who have lost their eyesight or have visual impairment. With clarity provided by digital technology, they can enjoy a novel and allow their imagination to pull them into the story. They are also beneficial for people who spend a lot of time working in front of a computer. With audio books, there’s no eyestrain and it’s a more relaxing and entertaining way to explore a story.

Through audio books on Mp3, parents and children can come together in a fun family night. Instead of watching television or playing video games, families can listen to audio books together and create accompanying entertainment or just enjoy great conversations.

Because they are not bulky like printed books, audio books on Mp3 fit perfectly into a person’s lifestyle. On the way to and from work, commuters can listen to a novel, whether their mode of transportation is car, train, bus, or bike. For those with busy schedules who are unable to pick up a book and get involved in a story, audio books bring the enjoyment of a novel back because they can be listened to while walking, waiting in a doctor’s office, shopping, doing household chores, exercising, or any other daily activity or task.

When it comes to selection, audio books on Mp3 can’t be beat. Because of their popularity, many new books come out first as digital downloads before being released in print, tapes or CDs. Audio books offer a large selection in all genres, among them new releases, bestsellers, romance, mystery, science fiction, religious, history, culture and other areas. Even magazines, self-help topics and reference materials can be accessed in digital format.

Audio books on Mp3 are recorded in digital form so downloading is easy, takes just a few minutes and is ready for listening immediately. There’s no need to make a stop at your bookstore or wait for mail delivery. In most cases, downloads are less expensive than buying the printed book version or a CD audio book. Several audio book vendors have subscription deals and frequent promotions that make the costs even less.

There are many advantages to audio books on Mp3. The most convenient is they are compact, so they can be taken anywhere. They also hold many more audio books than a traditional CD player, expanding your listening options. Storage is also better, taking up less space than printed books. With their digital format, audio books can be played over and over again, giving the listener round the clock access to a good novel at their fingertips.

Le Reve – Beauty and Seduction like Never Before

Posted by Giggi On March - 20 - 2009

Le Reve – A Small Collection of Imperfect Dreams – is a phenomenal performance exclusive to Wynn Las Vegas. This stunning show has captured the imaginations of hundreds of audiences, so much so that tickets are becoming more difficult to purchase. In 2005, Le Reve performed its very first act – ever! To this day Le Reve captivates audiences and provides them with entertainment that cannot be found anywhere else. Le Reve is not only a show, but it also tells a story of the nature of good and evil.

The stage – on its own – is just as luring as the performance. It is circular shaped with multiple entrances for the performers to enter the stage. This type of design brings the performers and audience closer, in ways that can only be experienced if you are physically there. Because of the architecture, of the stage, you can sit anywhere in the audience and have an exceptional view.

Whether you are sitting in the front or back row, you will be able to witness the magical transformation – of the stage – as it prepares for amazing aquatic aerobic performances. These amazing stunts are not only performed under water, but high above audiences’ heads as well!

There is a special only VIP Indulgence Package that gives consumers a little extra touch with their experience. This package, while limited to 100 per show, gives you VIP seating with extra plush chairs, champagne, and chocolate covered strawberries. Additionally, you can enjoy behind the scenes activities with a monitor that is provided for your convenience. You will enjoy a fascinating show regardless, but this is a great package for pampering yourself and / or a loved one.

You do not have to have a VIP package to have a phenomenal view of the show. The seating is arranged in a circular shape, which completely surrounds the 1-million gallon aquatic stage. The maximum distance you will ever be, from the stage, is 30-40 feet.

The synchronized performances, both underwater and above, are absolutely breath taking! These talented, skillful performers are able to perform at heights that are nearly unbelievable. Additionally, they perform without ropes or protective harnesses, which make the entire show even more amazing. Audiences are often caught gasping many of the tricks like triple spins and quadruple loops.

Many of these performers were once Olympic competitors, which is one of the reasons for the extreme discipline the performers have. (This type of show could not be pulled off without such discipline.) The combination of moves, perfection, and costumes shows the human form in one of the most striking manners ever seen. Producers, troupe, and choreographers are perfectionists; even though the show is already a hit, they are continuously perfecting moves and stunts and pushing the performers to work harder. Because of this, there is a high chance that you could get a different show each time you see it.

Franco Dragone is a legend due to many of his other productions; productions like “O” and “Mystere”. Le Reve is Dragone’s third production, and it has definitely made him the talk of the town. Since its debut in 2005, Le Reve is in constant demand, making tickets difficult to purchase. Le Reve is one of the most fascinating, seductive, beautiful performances in many, many years! If you can get your hands on tickets to this breath taking performance, do not pass them up!

The iPod is arguably the best MP3 player on the market. While there are many competitors, none of them are close to having the popularity of Apples product. Not only is the iPod one of the oldest MP3 players, but it also has the most capabilities.

Surprisingly, it only took a short amount of time to develop the first iPod. It was released in late 2001 and was announced at the Macworld Conference. To make the iPod, Apple utilized the skills of Tony Fadell and other outside help.

One of the most well known features of the iPod is its simplistic interface. With most iPods, there is a click wheel that contains five functions, which is all that is necessary. It enables you to quickly get where you need to go with the least effort possible.

Many editions and models of iPods have been introduced in the almost past decade. The iPod Mini was released on February 20, 2004, and was the first iPod “sequel”. In addition to a revised click wheel, it was also, as the name suggests, considerably smaller.

The iPod Mini wasn’t out long before it was replaced by the iPod Nano. Just like the Mini surprised people with its small size, the Nano did with its incredibly small size. Four different versions of the iPod Nano have been released since its inception.

The cheapest type of iPod available is the iPod Shuffle. The low cost is due to the fact that the Shuffle has no screen, and is controlled only by buttons. The principle is that if you only put songs on it you like, then the shuffle feature should be adequate, although many people like the higher interactivity of other models.

If you are interested in a high-tech iPod, than the iPod Touch is the perfect option. It can go on the Internet, play hours of video, hold hundreds of pictures, and thousands of songs. Best of all, it utilizes touch, which is much faster than any previous system.

The Apple iPhone is not considered an iPod, but the Touch and iPhone are identical in their form and most of their functions, save for calling people. Its hard to imagine what the next type of iPod will be, but whatever it is, it is sure to be groundbreaking.
